Yankees Last Stand

So the Yankees are down 3-0 to the Tigers in the AL Championship series, and tonight is their last stand. If they lose, it will be the first time in 32 years that they have been swept.

Last time was in the 1980 ALCS vs. the KC Royals. The Yankees have NEVER avoided being swept when they’ve trailed three games to none.

So what’s to stop the sweep from happening? Nothing that we can see. They seem to be deserving it. How their “superstars” can play like little leaguers is a mystery, but that’s what you get when you don’t assemble a team, but a group of individuals. An all-star team rarely works in a team setting. The guilty parties, Rodriguez, Granderson, Swisher and Cano, once a poor man’s murderer’s row is now a poor man’s skid row, sliding down to batting 13 of 114 (.114).

Yes of course, there’s that big deal about A-rod allegedly flirting with a bikini model during the game. What? He’s not allowed to have some fun? I mean he works hard for his money, doesn’t he? Well, he’s been much maligned so I won’t go any further with that, but if a player like that performs as poorly as he has, he must expect some backlash. A story is USA Today says he’s as good as gone, and that may well be the case.

Meanwhile, the pitching is not a problem at all. They’ve been pitching well, but without any hitting the Yankees are doomed. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Yankees enter Game 4 with franchise-worsts in batting average (.200), on-base percentage (.265) and strikeouts per game (8.9) in single postseason of at least seven games. Their 2.6 runs per game are the fewest among all such teams since the 1972 Oakland Athletics (2.4).

If Ol’ George was still running the team, you’d see a completely different team out there, I can guarantee you that, but instead, you have what you have.

I just watched the Ken Burns’ baseball series and if you haven’t seen it, you must. It’s great. But what I learned from it is that teams who come back have heart, and the Yankees seem to be missing that.
