The Bouncing Ball: thoughts on sports by Paul West, World’s End Edition

Hi again, readers! I’d like to take a moment to say R.I.P. to my pops, Paul S. West v. 1; and now, on to my thoughts on the happenings of the sports world. Enjoy, and feel free to respectfully engage!

–NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, in an effort to reduce concussions, recently floated the idea of a weight limit on kickoffs. In so doing, he has provided further evidence that he is a DOPE. Dear Mr. Goodell: force involves mass AND acceleration, and all things considered equal, the small-to-medium-sized players run faster. Unless you’re doing to make the weight limit 120lbs, then this is just silly–and will possibly increase the rate of concussions, as grown men running extremely fast is not a recipe for the reduction of force. But, seriously, we already knew he was an idiot.

–As a huge Knicks fan, I’m happy to see them doing so well. But I’m pretty mad to watch Carmelo Anthony confirm what I said for much of last season: that he can play defense when he wants to. I think he tanked, perhaps somewhat unconsciously but only somewhat, last season, to help get Jeremy Lin out of town. I hope Lin drops 30 on his pudgy a-s, and runs him all over the court–maybe even dunks on him, as Lin has damn good hops. Moreover, I think Lin’s recent comments on about people ‘not wanting to be embarrassed’ by an Asian cat are right on the money. I hope the Rockets go to the Western Conference Finals.

—The AL MVP argument did NOT only come down to sabermentrics freaks vs. ‘the old school.’ I think sabermetrics are somewhat overrated, and I also strongly believe Mike Trout should have been the AL MVP. I do, however, think Price and Dickey are the right choices…same for Buster Posey.

–The NHL continues to disgrace itself, and I mostly blame management for its woes.

–LeBron, early in his career, gave people lots of reasons to root against him. But the vitriol heaped upon him was largely unnecessary and beyond context, and I’ve since come to root for him more and more. And I certainly agree with him on this count: Charles Barkley needs to SHUT UP. Charles Barkley is a simpleminded, embarrassing mushmouth and a clown, who played dirty and was more of a scorer than a leader (see Carmelo Anthony). SHUT UP.
