The Bouncing Ball, by Paul West: The World Series Edition

Hi readers! Sorry it’s been a while, but I was preparing for my first post-relaunch book signing this past Sunday (pardon the plug). Please read below for my thoughts on sports–and feel free to comment (respectfully)!

–Going into last week’s games, there were ELEVEN 3-3 teams in the NFL, and only two teams in the AFC have winning records. Seriously? I think this reflects parity, but it also reflects the effect of so many rookie QBs in the NFL. They’re all talented and promising; they’re also all streaky, and centering their games. It’s also, I think, a side-effect of how technology has allowed teams to scout each other really extensively.

–The Yankees are really, really gonna be in trouble when their core finishes aging out. Jeter isn’t as close as people think, or have thought, but the rest of their core has disappeared from around him; eventually, they’re going to be one of those teams that’s a ‘bomb squad’ on paper, and consistently under-performs (Chris Webber/Chris Mullin Golden State Warriors anyone?).

–The NHL owners have got to be kidding. I’m totally on their side here…that said, I really hope there’s a season, because the NY Rangers are on the brink.

–Goodell stepping aside for Tagliabue, now, that’s instructive. This entire ‘bountygate’ thing has been mismanaged on all sides, and the circus just keeps getting sillier. And the players aren’t really much safer.

–Jeremy Lin, if he doesn’t have a really good season in Houston, is going to go back to being undervalued. And that would be a shame.

–Warren Moon is right, insofar as we only seem to compare QBs within ‘racial’ categories. Why doesn’t RG3 ever get compared to John Elway, for example?

–That Suh hit on Jay Cutler, while legal, was still dirty. He drove his face into the ground. It was unnecessary…the point is to end the play and get the player to the ground, not to punish them or hurt them. I hate this regressive aspect of football, and it’s part of why–per my above comment–the players still aren’t getting much safer.

–One thing we have to remember about Barry Zito: he’s still not that old, for a pitcher. It just seems that way, because he dropped off so precipitously and for a bunch of years. I think tonight’s gonna be a duel, and I hope he and Verlander go deep into the game. Prediction: Tigers in seven games.
