Lingerie Football Drops The Lingerie, And That’s A Good Thing

The Lingerie Football League has announced that it’s no longer going to be playing in lingerie; in an attempt to ‘go legit,’ it’s going to promote its sport more as an actual sport than a sideshow. Thank goodness.

Unlike other sports, there’s no strategy or mobility-related argument for playing tackle football in skimpy clothing. Their attractiveness can still be part of the marketing campaign–it’s certainly been so for Brady, Jeter, Wright, Tebow and Sanchez–but you don’t have to make them play in lingerie. It’s disgraceful, and a disservice to the legitimate concept of female athleticism being sexy. Some marketing-guru dope came up with this nonsense, and thank goodness it’s behind us.

Respecting them as athletes (and if you watch clips or read the bios, a lot of em are actually pretty serious about the game and their craft and pretty good at it) shouldn’t necessarily be mutually exclusive with finding their athleticism–or just them–sexy; it also doesn’t have to be mutually inclusive with making them play dressed as Victoria’s Secret models.

Tangentially, it should probably be a flag league. Women’s sports, unfortunately, still tends toward huge top-to-bottom competitive disparities, and the scores might be as ridiculous as women’s D1 hoops scores–and once the best players are allowed to freight-train the lower tiers like in this video, the concussion problem might go through the ceiling FAST, .
