Remember Steve Smith, wide receiver of the New York Giants who helped the team win a super bowl in 2007? Remember the guy who hurt his knee and still wanted more money when his contract expired in 2010? And instead of resigning with the Giants decided he could do better elsewhere, signing with the rival Philadelphia Eagles?

Yeah that guy. Well, he retired today, issuing a statement released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his team of record. “I’ve been blessed to play the game that I love at the highest level for the past six years…I will always cherish my time with the New York Giants and our Super Bowl victory in 2007. I also want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers organizations for the opportunities they gave me. This was not an easy decision, but it’s the right decision for me at this time.”

He was never the same after that injury.

Giants GM Jerry Reese took a lot of heat for not resigning Smith that year. Giants fans were up in arms wondering how he can let the team’s single-season record holder for catches walk. Smith caught 107 passes and was named to the 2010 Pro Bowl. He was the “next big thing”.

But I guess Reese really does know his stuff. He can say, “I told you so”, and he’d be right…again.

I’m sure Reese is shaking his head though, at the fact that he made a good offer that was turned down, and Smith rushed his comeback against his advice and the advice of Giants doctors. Is Reese ever wrong?

Victor Cruz take note, take the money and run, (or dance the salsa, if you prefer.)
