Hello kiddies and welcome to Doc’s Goodies!
Diagnosies from around the sports world…
Jerry Sloan

I didn’t think Jerry Sloan would work out in Portland. He’s an OLD school guy from when he was a player though his whole coaching career. Old school in every sense and Portland is just not old school enough for the man. The problem is, where is old school enough for the man? I’d love to see him coach again, but in today’s player-first game, is he obsolete? I hope not, but my hopes don’t always come true.
USA Basketball, Blake and Serge
Even though the US demolished the Dominican Republic tonight 113-59, it was overshadowed by the news that Blake Griffin could be out of the olympics. The LA Times reports that Blake Griffin has a torn meniscus, and will likely miss the games. That’s a shame, but maybe this will make Spain the favorites in the olympics since Spain’s Serge Ibaka said (of the US team), “They are just like us, they also have players with a lot of talent.”
Hmmm maybe without Blake then, they can’t compete with you and the rest of your Spaniard compatriots? Si Serge? Get well soon Blake.
Joe Paterno

Do I have to comment on Joe Pa and his legacy? Enough’s been said on the subject but what went through my mind immediately after hearing that the FBI found evidence that he and others covered up child sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky was that it did him in. He was not in great health to begin with, but when the shit hit the fan, the stress was just too much for the old man. Can you imagine what he was going through? When it came out initially, he denied knowing about it, which was probably ingrained in him for years, to think about it in that way. Deny, deny, deny. So he did what he trained himself to do. But then the evidence began to build, and he saw no way out. He knew his life in coaching was over, and for him, this being all he knew, his life was over.
But he did the wrong thing, obviously. He should have not been so selfish trying to keep being a superstar money-making machine, and he should have helped those kids. I feel bad for the kids, I feel bad for Paterno, and I feel bad for our society, because people will talk about it for a while, and then it will fade out of consciousness, except for the victims, who will live with it for the rest of their lives.
This is what happens when you do things for money and power and not from your heart. But that’s the way of the world, eh?
Kobe and his mouth
Getting back to the Olympics and the current USA basketball team, Kobe says this team would beat the dream team? I could fire up NBA2k12 on XBOX right now and play that matchup and the dream team would run rings around you Kobe. It would look like NBA Elite 11.
Craig Appel, The Rally Pumpkin
On a different note, I’d like to give a special shout out to Rick Chandler who wrote a beautiful and sad piece on the San Fransisco Giants’ “Rally Pumpkin”, AKA Craig Appel.
This is a story that everyone MUST read. The kind of story that makes you hug your children, wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend or anyone close to you. Life is precious, and it can easily be taken away from you at the drop of a hat. I was on a similar path in the past, but I guess I was lucky. I’m still here.
Till next time, keep believing.
